“Journalists for Justice welcomes reports that the Kenya Defence Forces is interested in investigating racketeering in sugar and charcoal by some of its members in Somalia.

JFJ recommended such an investigation, alongside other actions by the President, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and the UN Office for Human Rights.

JFJ would like to caution, however, that such an investigation must be above board and transparent. A faceless, unnamed team of investigators does not inspire confidence in the final outcome, coming as it does after two months of strident denials and strained public relations spins aimed at confusing the issues rather than getting to the truth.

JFJ stands ready to support the findings made in its report, Black and White: Kenya’s Criminal Racket in Somalia, before a credible inquiry aimed at exposing the truth. As it were, the report JFJ published in November 2015 contains sufficient names and details to enable a serious investigator to commence work.

It is not, therefore, true for anyone to claim that JFJ has declined to provide evidence when its report is available to the public on its website.”
