Journalist

Journalists for Justice (JFJ) is an organisation working to strengthen investigative and public-interest journalism in Africa, with a particular focus on human rights, international justice, accountability and the experiences of victims of atrocity crimes. A significant part of JFJ’s work involves producing rigorous, well-researched journalism that brings underreported stories to wider audiences and contributes to informed public debate.

OVERVIEW

JFJ is seeking an experienced and motivated journalist for a full-time position based in Nairobi.

We are looking for a strong reporter and storyteller who can independently identify, research and develop compelling public-interest stories. The role will involve investigative research, interviewing, field reporting and writing, with a particular focus on human rights, conflict, international justice and transitional justice.

As part of the JFJ editorial team, the successful candidate will contribute to developing story ideas, conduct in-depth research and interviews, and produce accurate, engaging and publication-ready journalism.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be expected to:

1. Conduct in-depth research, interviews and field reporting on human rights, conflict, international justice and transitional justice issues.
2. Identify, pitch and develop original feature and investigative stories.
3. Produce high-quality, well-researched, balanced and publication-ready stories, working largely independently.
4. Verify information, documents and source material and maintain high standards of accuracy, fairness and responsible journalism.
5. Work with the JFJ editorial team to develop compelling narratives and, where appropriate, multimedia storytelling packages.
6. Participate in weekly editorial meetings and contribute ideas for new investigations and stories.
7. Develop and maintain relationships with journalists, researchers, affected communities, human rights organisations and other relevant sources and stakeholders.
8. Attend and report on relevant events, hearings, conferences and other developments on behalf of JFJ.
9. Undertake other editorial duties that contribute to JFJ’s journalism and broader objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants should:

1. Hold a degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field.
2. Have at least five years of professional journalism experience, preferably including investigative or long-form reporting.
3. Demonstrate excellent reporting, interviewing, research and writing skills, with a proven ability to produce publication-ready copy.
4. Have strong news judgment and the ability to identify original and compelling story angles.
5. Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy, fairness and verification.
6. Be able to work independently, manage multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
7. Have a demonstrated interest in human rights, social justice, conflict or international justice.
8. Have excellent written and spoken English.
9. Experience covering human rights, conflict, international justice or transitional justice will be an added advantage.
10. Familiarity with photography, video, digital storytelling or social media is also an advantage.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. Full-time position, five days a week, based in Nairobi, Kenya.
2. The appointment will be subject to a three-month probationary period, after which the position may be confirmed based on performance.
3. Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
