Dominic Ongwen’s trial at the International Criminal Court will open on December 6, 2016.
Ongwen is facing 70 charges, 10 of which were filed confidentially due to security risks and protection issues and will be heard in private. It is alleged that as a former Commander in the Sinia Brigade of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), Ongwen committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The Prosecution start start presenting evidence in January 2017 on a date yet to be determined.
The confirmed charges concern crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed during attacks against IDP camps. Other charges relate to sexual and gender-based crimes directly and indirectly committed by Ongwen, and crimes of conscription and use of children under the age of 15 allegedly committed in northern Uganda between 1 July 2002 and 31 December 2005. Ongwen was surrendered to the ICC on January 16, 2015 pursuant to an ICC warrant of arrest and transferred to the Court’s custody onJanuary 21, 2015.
