Thousands of women and men were sexually violated during the post-election violence. During that time, Patricia Nyaundi, currently Chief Executive Officer at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) was a senior program officer at the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Kenya.

She received distress calls from hundreds of women who had been raped.

She talks to Journalists for Justice Joyce J. Wangui about the women’s ordeals, their difficulties in coping with the physical injuries & the trauma associated with rape.

Nyaundi talks of how FIDA was able to give these women initial assistance including enabling them come into grips with rape. She says the stereotypical labeling of a woman who has been sexually violated inhibited many from disclosing their experiences, seeking medical attention and reporting to the authorities.
